Types of Care

Learning from the Nation, Tribe,  or Band Metis or Indigenous community is vital to being successful.

Take time within the community, Nation, or Band to understand what they envision for their children's future. Ask what they want children to learn, and create space to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and learn through respectful engagement.

This section will explore types of child care and the diverse business and governance models within the child care sector. 

This section will also help participants identify and understand the roles of government regulatory bodies in BC’s child care system. If you are in a different context than BC, you are invited to use the BC contextual information as a prompt to explore what might be an equivalent in your setting. In this section, participants will consider how they will work collaboratively with regulatory agencies to support quality child care.

British Columbia has many categories or types of care, which are then run under various child care business plans.

Types of Care

Leading with Flexibility and Respect

Each Nation has its own unique ways of being and doing. As a leader, it is essential to take direction from the Nation, community, or Tribe; build trusting relationships; and remain flexible. This means letting go of assumptions about what may be needed and working alongside the Nation and its cultural supports.

What is the Nation’s philosophy? Goals? Dreams? For their children?
