Living in a world of uncertainty presses us to be nimble and proactive. We highlight two strategies to support you in the direction you are aiming for and as ways of getting in front of the chaotic world.

The first strategy is scenario thinking, which is intended to help you examine different pathways to support you to accomplish your goals.

A second approach is seeking out contracts that contribute to strengthening skill sets and professional experience, and could include a combination of learning and working. For some, this might be a stopgap measure, since the preferred way of working is full-time rather than a few part-time contracts. For others, it could be a long-term strategy, as it can incorporate knowledge, development, and experience acquisition in multiple areas.

To dovetail on the contract/freelance work approach, self-employment is worth mentioning as another option particularly for those with high risk tolerance. Here are a couple of resources to take a look at.

Is self-employment for you? (required skills and self-assessments)

Remember, there are various routes to any destination—generally, careers do not progress in a linear fashion. Career growth is about cultivating curiosity and persistence—characteristics that Bright indicates in Chaos Theory of Careers (CTC) (2013). Furthermore, growth and transformation transpires by seeking out and exploring different opportunities and experiences. As a result this increases unexpected serendipitous events—advocated by Krumboltz (2009) in The Happenstance Learning Theory.

In addition, this module includes evaluating your personal assets and external factors as part of establishing your vision, combined with creating a few current and not too distant actionable steps. Know that ongoing reflection, self-awareness, situational awareness, and patience are an integral part of this process.

Everyone is different. Find what works for you, be brave, take risks, experiment, and step out into the unknown.
