What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and why do we care?

EQ is defined in this clip by Daniel Goleman, an expert in EQ.

Watch the first minute for the definition (Big Think, 2012)(Video - 2:18)

Bradbury and Greaves, the authors of the book Emotional Intelligence 2.0 offer this definition,

“Your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships” (2009, p.17).

It is important to know that “EQ ...is a flexible skill that can be learned” (Bradbury & Greaves, 2009, p.18). Therefore, EQ skills can be strengthened through practice. One more important point, EQ skills are transferable skills and in demand by employers! The value of transferable skills is reviewed in the Defining Resources Unit.

EQ involves having emotional self-awareness and the ability to self-regulate. The intent of this module is to increase your awareness about EQ, specifically two EQ skills: adaptability and a positive outlook (or optimism). In this module, you can take a step back, reflect on these skills.
