Introduction: Skills Employers Want

The Labour Market Information Council defines skills as “...developed capacities that an individual must demonstrate to be effective in a job, role, function, task or duty” ( 2020).

In essence, the skills—to do with humans—are transferable. These transferable skills (commonly known as soft skills) can transfer from one occupation to the next, are in demand now and will be crucial for the future.

Technological skills are another ball of wax and continue to evolve (there is a compilation of skills we developed from the analysis of five reports as mentioned in the unit introduction, you can refer to the list of technological skills below).

Based on this vertical ascent of technology, one could make an assumption that employers would place a higher worth on technological skills over skills like communication. Yet, transferable skills rank equal to, if not higher in value by employers—even by companies like Google.
