Checklist

  • Have you reflected on your reactions and/or assumptions to each scenario?
  • Did you rate yourself for each of the four actions that build HQCs and trust?
  • Have you determined an area you want to develop to be more effective with building HQCs? If so, what and how will you develop this area?
Try to complete the above items before moving on.

Reflection Questions

  • Who is on your list of HQCs and what actions did you take to make this happen?
  • Where and how do professionals from your industry stay connected?
  • What actions have you conducted, what worked, what would you do differently?
  • How will you continue to develop your community/network?

Take your time, and think about these questions before moving on.

Module Conclusion

Building and maintaining community is a lifelong career management skill. It takes time, effort, consistency, and patience. People who are proficient in networking are respectful by keeping their word, are truly present when they’re in the presence of others, radically listen, and approach relationships with an attitude of “how can I help you?” Moreover, they prioritize spending time together to nurture and keep the relationship moving.

Acknowledge that some people aren’t interested—this is OK. We cannot engage everyone, and we cannot expect everyone to meet our needs. Be aware of your reactions to these situations, remain positive, professional and polite. Thank the person for their conversation and insights.

We advocate to take action, release expectations, and be open to serendipity.

"There are two general approaches to life and business: transactions and relationships. Transactions can offer success but only relationships can offer success and a great life."
