Service Level 1 (SL1) courses have run before, and can run again pretty much as they are (with minor tweaks done by the instructor - such as instructor introduction and contact info, assignment due dates, perhaps a small change in readings.)You will likely be teaching this course as well as updating it, so check out the Preparing to Teach at Royal Roads page while you are updating your course. Your primary work will be getting to know your course and then making a few updates.

How long will this take?

If you are knowledgeable about the course (learning outcomes, assignments, etc.) and familiar with editing in Moodle, it will go fairly quickly... a couple of hours if you are not making many changes. Calling or visiting CTET Studio can help you be effective and efficient in updating your course. CTET Studio will provide you with support as you make the required updates. You may call them or drop in. Check out Studio information on the CTET website.

  1. Review the information on the Service Level 1 on the CTET website
  2. Read all parts of the course (either via a pdf 'course compile' provided by the program staff or by spending time on the Moodle site). Ensure that you are knowledgeable about the readings, the assignments and the flow (what happens when) of the course. Make sure that you have talked with the Program Head and understand their expectations.
  3. Use the SL1 Checklist to guide your work - This page lists the primary tasks that you will need to work on AND it links to instruction pages to help you with Moodle
  4. If there are learning activities and/or assignments in your course that require the use of technologies, you might need to brush up on them (or learn to use them). Check out the Moodle & Other tools age of the CTET website as a start. CTET Studio can also help.

You will probably want to participate in one of CTET's Moodle workshops, too.

Communicate, communicate, communicate!

Your program staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. When in doubt, contact them. They will make you aware of policies, guidelines, procedures and resources that can help you.

Keep an eye on Crossroads and its Events Calendar. There are many events available to associate faculty whether you are local or from a distance. Meeting other instructors and staff will help you learn more about Royal Roads.
