In British Columbia, unpaid positions or internships offered by businesses are illegal under the Employment Standards Act. Only not-for-profit organizations, charities, and community groups seeking volunteers can advertise unpaid roles, which are not governed by the Act.

Volunteering usually means providing services without monetary compensation. However, under Canadian labor regulations, providing services without pay may not always constitute volunteering and could contravene labour standards or require a work permit.

International students should exercise caution when volunteering to ensure compliance with student visa regulations.
