Pre-course reflection: Qualities of Leaders
Pre-course reflection: Qualities of Leaders
This pre-course reflection activity will require about 30-60 minutes.
Steps
-
Prepare some tools for this activity: notebook, paper, pen and a writing space. You might include coloured pens or pencils if you prefer to draw or illustrate your ideas.
-
Find a comfortable place to sit where you can think undisturbed for about an hour. You may choose to be indoors or outdoors with sounds of nature or play music, whatever helps you relax and reflect.
-
Reflect on the following questions:
- What comes to your mind when you hear the words leader and leadership? Write down ten words that describe your thoughts of what each of these two words mean to you. How do their meanings differ?
- What qualities do you believe an effective leader needs to have? Write down at least 10 words that describe these qualities.
- What do you consider to be barriers that impede effective leadership? This may include thoughts about lack of resources, time, and knowledge. Write down five sentences that speak to your concerns.
-
Finally, think about a person you consider an excellent leader. It may be a public figure or a current or past manager, someone you admire for their ability to lead a team or a project. Write a short paragraph about why you have chosen this person as your example.
