Introduction

This module focuses on how external factors, especially LMI, affect career decisions and management. While LMI may sound daunting or elusive, chances are you're already aware of it when when reviewing job trends, industry articles, or career opportunities.

The goal of this unit is to help you intentionally integrate external data—like trends, industry changes, and occupational insights—into your career planning. This is known as situational awareness (Endsley & Garland, 2000): understanding your environment to make informed decisions.

Situational awareness means spotting opportunities early. For example:

Learning a company is expanding and connecting with staff before jobs are posted

  • Noticing leadership changes and arranging an information meeting
  • Identifying unmet needs (e.g., new ethical approaches for using AI in a job function) to create an unexpected career path

You’ll also explore practical external factors, like where you want to live and work.
