Introduction

What is EQ, and why does it matter?

Daniel Goleman, a leading expert, defines EQ in the first minute of this video (Big Think, 2012, 2:18).

Bradbury and Greaves, authors of Emotional Intelligence 2.0, define it as:

“Your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships” (Bradbury & Greaves, 2009, p.17).

Importantly, EQ is a learnable and flexible skill that improves with practice. It’s also a transferable skill that employers highly value across sectors and industries.  Explore your transferable skills in the Defining Resources Unit.

This module focuses on building awareness of emotional intelligence (EQ), particularly two key components: adaptability and maintaining a positive outlook.
