Student Perceptions of Openness: Survey of Current Literature
This project is engaged in mapping and documenting the current literature on student perceptions and experiences of open educational environments in order to discover best practices for students working in the open. The results of this project will be used through the iterative design and development of courses in the Master of Arts in Learning and Technology (MALAT). Project deliverables include a literature review and dissemination of finding via conference presentations and publication.

Framing Our Narrative: A Photo-Voice Project
As part of Assignment 4: Photoscape Reading - Instagram Posts (Individual), students in the Master of Arts in Tourism Management (MATM) Global Tourism course were asked to create a reflective journal for the duration of their fieldtrip to the United Kingdom and to use Instagram to share their photos / videos, and 50 to 70 word comments linking core course concepts to their posts. The assignment specifically addressed 2 of the Program Learning Outcomes and provided learners with an opportunity to apply parts of the Royal Roads University Learning and Teaching Model as they conducted field work and engaged in life-changing learning.

Leveraging Team Based Learning and Technology to Support Online Learning Communities in a Community of Practice (CoP) Based Special Topics courseThe goals of this project are the design and evaluation of a course based on Communities of Practice and Digital Communication principles delivered in an online format and context. The objectives of this work will be to review the literature in order to inform the action research study and work with a small group of current students (9-12) to co create and iteratively evaluate a course that engages, provides opportunities to explore and master specific program learning outcomes, and experience the power of a learning community within a virtual space.

Microsoft OneNote - An exploration of the potential for teaching and learning: Two STHM teachers' journey into leveraging Microsoft OneNote as an effective presentation and note-sharing toolAs long-time PowerPoint users Moira and Ian moved lecture notes to OneNote for one semester and began to see how OneNote’s structure, plus flexibility supports fluid, interactive presentations. There were other benefits. All class notes were easily shared through one synced link to OneNote through Moodle. Students received lecture note updates which were easily viewed on laptops, tablets and phones. The pilot shows the potential, plus some of the detractors for OneNote users at Royal Roads. Students report their experiences and answer if it helped to learn more effectively. Moira and Ian share some of the ups and downs of Microsoft OneNote and why they plan to continue to use it.

Making Informed Choices on ePortfolio IntegrationSeveral schools and programs at Royal Roads University have adopted ePortfolios as tools for developing a program-wide picture learning and achievement that is meaningful to both instructors and students. The Bachelor of Arts in Professional Communications (BAPC) has integrated an ePortfolio with the revisions following its most recent 5 year review. Successful implementation of an ePortfolio element can be supported by a collection of relevant research. This project includes a literure review of academic research on ePortfolio efficacy and the creation of an online ePortfolio research bibliography.
