Government Structures and Regulatory Bodies

There are several government ministries, regulatory bodies, and programs that are integral to overseeing and supporting the Early Learning and Childcare sector in British Columbia. These organizations ensure that childcare services meet regulatory standards, oversee financial support programs and foster professional development for educators. The most influential are the Ministry of Education and Child Care, the Ministry of Health and the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Registry. In this section, you will explore how these collectively contribute to building a system of quality, accessible, and inclusive early childhood education in the province.

There are various government ministries, regulatory bodies and programs that are integral to supporting and guiding the Indigenous (First Nations) sector in British Columbia.  

These various supports will provide for staffing, management, training, financial supports, and funding.  Find out what is being offered in the region or territories that you are supporting; connect with the local First Nation agencies/supports such as BC Aboriginal Childcare Society, or Aboriginal Head Start advisors. Also, the local Friendship Centers.  They are there to support, guide, fund, advocate, provide training opportunities, and provide funding for tailored staff development or training. 

 Various Nations may have control of their own Education and Childcare systems, which will create programs to meet the unique needs of their communities.  Recognizing that each Nation in this province is different from the others and the way they may explore how they want to build their own systems in childcare, which will restore what was taken and lost through colonization.  Learning how these specialized First Nations programs will create the future leaders that they are meant to be.  Creating opportunities to build on systems of quality, accessibility and inclusive Early Childhood Education in the province of BC
