Welcome to Module 3: Financial Management in Childcare Settings

In this module, you will reflect on the knowledge and skills required to manage financial resources effectively in child care settings. It includes budgeting practices, salary management, funding opportunities, and navigating ministry funding agreements. In this section, participants will gain a clear understanding of available funding streams within the BC context and how to align their financial practices with government guidelines and regulatory requirements.

It is good to note that you may not have any financial control over the budget, funding allocations, applying for funding, reporting on the budgets or the spending of funds.  Often, many Nations, Bands, and Tribes have full control of these areas.  You may have to work within what you are given or allocated, or who may oversee your position may determine what you will be allocated weekly, monthly or yearly; they may create your budgets and may do your reporting as well.    It takes flexibility to support and understand the complexity of how each Nation, Band or Tribes may handle their business and how they may want you to handle or not handle their business.  

Always best to find out what their expectations are for your position. What do they want you to do? When applying for funding, make sure you have support for the application.  You may have to complete a Request for Decision and then complete a BCR, which is a Band Council Resolution that  Leadership votes on, either supporting or not supporting this request for additional funding.  

Some Nations, Bands, or Tribes may not want to have this additional funding or support; it is always best to find out what is best for the communities from their own perspective.  

Understanding financial management is essential for operating a successful and sustainable child care centre. This knowledge equips administrative leaders to develop and manage budgets that align with the centre's vision while also complying with regulatory requirements.

Meet with the Finance Department that oversees your budgets regularly to ensure you follow the budgets and stay within the allotted amounts for the week, month, or year.
