Welcome to the Leadership Essentials of Governance, Finance, and HR course!
This openly accessible course site is part a set of open educational resources designed specifically for early childhood education (ECE) leaders and managers in British Columbia, Canada. The content, activities, and examples are grounded in the policies, frameworks, and practices relevant to this region. While we recognize that participants may access these open courses from anywhere in the world, it is important to note that the information presented reflects the BC context. We encourage participants from other regions to consult their local policies, governing bodies, guidelines, and regulations to ensure alignment with their specific practices and professional requirements
This 32-hour course provides topics relevant to administrative leaders in early learning and child care. It provides an overview of governance models, financial management, and human resource practices essential for effective leadership in early learning and childcare settings.
Participants will explore various governance structures, including private ownership, board-run, not-for-profit, corporate, and family childcare models, while gaining a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of government regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Education and Childcare, the ECE Registry, and Licensing authorities.
The course also focuses on financial management, equipping participants with skills to develop budgets, identify funding opportunities, and navigate ministry funding agreements, including programs like subsidies, wage enhancements, $10-a-day initiatives, and supportive child care development funding. Participants will explore human resource management topics, including hiring practices, understanding ECE certification levels, meeting staffing requirements, conducting evaluations, maintaining compliance with labour laws, and adhering to operational and marketing regulations as per licensing standards.
